Farming life is hard sometimes

We lost another chick today, unexpectedly. When I changed their water and food, and checked for pasty butt this morning, everyone seemed healthy and happy. When I came home after work, one little one was gasping for air. She did have some pasty butt, but she also had a rattling sound and seemed weak. We hoped for the best, but in just an hour or so, she stopped breathing. It was fast. Our best guess is “brooder pneumonia” caught from the incubator at the hatchery, but it’s difficult to really know these things. One of our guidebooks (Storey) says that once you notice a chicken has a disease, it is almost always too late to help her. That is the hardest part… being helpless.
