“A” is for Ark. Chicken Ark, that is. Greer and I (finally!) started building the chicken coop today. This project has been months in the planning, talking, and dreaming stage, and we have now moved forward to the doing stage. The plan is to have 3 laying hens to provide us with yummy eggs. The Ark allows for the chickens to be outside unsupervised in our garden, eating grass and small insects (in addition to the feed we give them). Then they get shut in the top part at night for safety. They will free range the backyard when we’re outside with them to make sure they don’t eat all the plants!
Our Chicken Ark plans came from the Internet for free, (who pays $20-$30 for coop plans?) and it’s a really good plan, except that it doesn’t tell you everything you need to know. http://www.organicgardening.com/sites/all/themes/zen/og/pdf/coop_plans.pdf It was still our favorite out of the billion or so we surveyed, so this is the one we’re going with. It’s requiring a bit of engineering on our part… well, really on Greer’s part. It’s coming together with a minimum of fussing/cussing, so that’s a good sign, I think! We’ll keep you posted on our progress!
